One play does not get to become three

Today's lesson

Watch a game closely and you'll see the same thing over and over. Someone makes an error, and then plays the next three minutes like they're still inside it. Hesitation on the next decision. A forced play trying to make up for it. Then a third mistake that had nothing to do with the first one except that it followed it.

The original error cost one play. The spiral cost the quarter.

Elite competitors aren't making fewer mistakes than you. They're just refusing to let one become three.

Today's challenge

Count today. Every time you make a mistake, notice whether the next rep was clean or contaminated. Don't fix anything yet — just count. Awareness comes before control.

Today's question

When you make a mistake, how many plays does it usually cost you? Be honest about the number.

Today's tip

Give yourself a physical hard stop — a hand wipe on the jersey, a tap of the chest. A body signal ends a play more convincingly than a thought does.

Remember

You can't control the first mistake. You have complete control over the second one.
