How to Reset After a Mistake in 10 Seconds
Share
Every athlete makes mistakes. What separates elite competitors isn't that they avoid errors — it's how fast they recover from them. The athletes who struggle let one mistake snowball: a missed shot becomes hesitation, hesitation becomes two more mistakes, and suddenly a single play has cost them the game.
The 10-second reset
Here's a simple, repeatable routine you can use the moment a mistake happens:
- Acknowledge it (1 second). Don't pretend it didn't happen. A quick mental "that's on me" beats denial.
- Release it physically (3 seconds). A deep breath, a wipe of the hands on the jersey, a tap of the chest — a physical cue that tells your brain the play is over.
- Refocus on the next play (3 seconds). Say your cue word — "next," "go," "reset" — and lock your eyes onto the next task.
- Re-engage (3 seconds). Get your body back into an aggressive, ready posture. Action kills doubt.
The key is repetition. Practice it in training so it's automatic in games.
